Add CI check that cmd- is not in linux keymaps + check other mods (#32334)
Motivation for the `cmd-` check is that there were a couple keybindings
using `cmd-` in the linux keymap and so these were bound to super /
windows

danger: Check for changes in prompt files (#31744)
This PR adds a Danger check to remind engineers that any changes to our
various prompts need to be verified against the LLM Worker.

When changes to the prompt files are detected, we will fail the PR with
a message:

<img width="929" alt="Screenshot 2025-05-30 at 8 40 58 AM"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/79afab4e-e799-45f1-a90e-0fd7c9a73706"
/>

Once the corresponding changes have been made (or no changes to the LLM
Worker have been determined to be necessary), including the indicated
attestation message will convert the errors into informational messages:

Add workspace-hack (#27277)
This adds a "workspace-hack" crate, see
[mozilla's](https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/3a265fdc9f33e5946f0ca0a04af73acd7e6d1a39/build/workspace-hack/Cargo.toml#l7)
for a concise explanation of why this is useful. For us in practice this
means that if I were to run all the tests (`cargo nextest r
--workspace`) and then `cargo r`, all the deps from the previous cargo
command will be reused. Before this PR it would rebuild many deps due to
resolving different sets of features for them. For me this frequently
caused long rebuilds when things "should" already be cached.

To avoid manually maintaining our workspace-hack crate, we will use
[cargo hakari](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari) to update the build files
when there's a necessary change. I've added a step to CI that checks
whether the workspace-hack crate is up to date, and instructs you to
re-run `script/update-workspace-hack` when it fails.

Finally, to make sure that people can still depend on crates in our
workspace without pulling in all the workspace deps, we use a `[patch]`
section following [hakari's
instructions](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari/0.9.36/cargo_hakari/patch_directive/index.html)

One possible followup task would be making guppy use our
`rust-toolchain.toml` instead of having to duplicate that list in its
config, I opened an issue for that upstream: guppy-rs/guppy#481.

TODO:
- [x] Fix the extension test failure
- [x] Ensure the dev dependencies aren't being unified by Hakari into
the main dependencies
- [x] Ensure that the remote-server binary continues to not depend on
LibSSL

Fix nix build (#26270)
This PR includes lots of small fixes to get our `build.nix` and
`shell.nix` back to a working state.

I've tested this by running `cargo run` (inside the devshell) and `nix
run` on x86 nixos and arm64 darwin machines. I'd appreciate it if others
could test building inside the devshell to double-check that it's not
just working because I happen to have some system-level packages
installed, as well as seeing if it works on other platforms (non-nixos
linux, arm linux, x86 darwin).

I couldn't get the full test suite (`cargo nextest run --workspace`)
passing in the devshell on darwin, but they _are_ all passing on nixos.
nixpkgs [disables some of our
tests](92d11f06d5/pkgs/by-name/ze/zed-editor/package.nix (L226-L234))
that apparently fail or are flakey on hydra, but they don't know why.
I'm going to punt on debugging those for now, especially given that they
seem to be working for me. I'm also unsure of whether we actually want
the nix checkPhase to run the full test suite (it's currently not
passing `--workspace`) given that we have separate CI that should
enforce that those pass on all PRs.

Here's an overview of the changes made:
- Fix our `generate-licenses` script
- Relaxes the `cargo-about` version requirement slightly so it doesn't
try to install an older binary when the nixpkgs one is newer than our
requirement
- Add a workaround for [this cargo-about
issue](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/19971) obviating the
need for the patching done in the nixpkgs package
- Set the new `--frozen` flag to avoid network access/mutating the
lockfile
- Use dynamic webrtc lib from nixpkgs, and fixes up the build script in
webrtc-sys that hardcodes it to be statically linked.
- Use `inputsFrom` in `shell.nix` and avoid duplicating everything from
`build.nix`
- Add a temporary workaround for an [upstream crane
bug](https://github.com/ipetkov/crane/issues/808).
- Fix shebangs in our `script` dir to not hard-code `/bin/bash`

There are still a bunch of issues that aren't resolved here, I'll make a
tracking issue for those and try to land this first just to get back to
an unbroken state. Eventually among other things I'd like to use a
`libgit2` from `staticPkgs` and musl cross compilation to build the
remote server under nix, and then add that as a separate flake output
and include it in the shell's `inputsFrom` list.

Thanks @niklaskorz, @GaetanLepage, @bbigras and all the other nixpkgs
maintainers that have kept the `zed-editor` package working and up to
date! I seriously considered just making our flake `overrideAttrs` the
package in nixpkgs given how well maintained it is.

Thanks @WeetHet for your volunteer maintinance of this flake. I
referenced #24953 while working on these fixes, and I'd love to
collaborate on adding some of those pieces like treefmt and a github
action. If you're interested I'd really appreciate some help debugging
why crane's `buildDepsOnly` isn't working for us. I'm assuming it'd make
our `nix build` times go way down from the improved dep caching if we
could get it working.

Thanks @rrbutani for all the help on this PR 💙.

chore: Do not bust Rust build cache when opening projects with dev build (#26278)
## Problem
Running `cargo run .` twice in Zed repository required a rebuild two
times in a row. The second rebuild was triggered around libz-sys, which
in practice caused a rebuild of the ~entire project.

Some concrete examples:
```
cargo test -p project # Requires a rebuild (warranted)
cargo run .
cargo test -p project # Requires a rebuild (unwarranted)
```
or
```
cargo run . # Requires a rebuild (warranted)
cargo run . # Requires a rebuild (unwarranted)
```

## What's going on
Zed build script on MacOS sets MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET to 10.15. This
is fine. However, **cargo propagates all environment variables to child
processes during `cargo run`**. This then affects Rust Analyzer spawned
by dev Zed - it clobbers build cache of whatever package it touches,
because it's behavior is not same between running it with `cargo run`
(where MACOS_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET gets propagated to child Zed) and running
it directly via `target/debug/zed` or whatever (where the env variable
is not set, so that build behaves roughly like Zed Dev.app).

## Solution
~We'll unset that env variable from user environment when we're
reasonably confident that we're running under `cargo run` by exploiting
other env variables set by cargo:
https://doc.rust-lang.org/cargo/reference/environment-variables.html
CARGO_PKG_NAME is always set to `zed` when running it via `cargo run`,
as it's the value propagated from the build.~

~The alternative I've considered is running [via a custom
runner](https://doc.rust-lang.org/cargo/reference/config.html#targetcfgrunner),
though the problem here is that we'd have to use a shell script to unset
the env variable - that could be problematic with e.g. fish. I just
didn't want to deal with that, though admittedly it would've been
cleaner in other aspects.~

Redact all above. We'll just set MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET regardless of
whether you have it in your OG shell environment or not.

ci: Fix issue response script (#24891)
This PR fixes the issue response script.

There were a number of things preventing it from working:

- The directory name used in the GitHub Action did not match the one on
disk.
  - The script has been moved accordingly
- `ts-node` does not support ESM.
- `ts-node` seems unmaintained, so I changed the script to be plain JS
that is type-checked with TypeScript.
- The data being sent to the Slack API was invalid:
- Each section block can only have a maximum of 3000 characters in the
`text` field, so we need to break up the issue list across multiple
sections.
- We needed to escape `&`, `<`, and `>` characters in the issue titles.

linux: Fix regex patterns for detecting Fedora in script/linux (#22611)
In `script/linux` file, in order to install build dependencies we check
ID and VERSION_ID fields of `/etc/os-release` file for installing
os-specific packages. The regex patterns for those fields are wrong
because there's no `"` character after `ID=` or `VERSION_ID=`. This
causes `grep` to fail.
So I extended the pattern by adding `"?` after each `"` character to
bypass the cause of failure.

linux: Fix file not opening from file explorer (#21137)
Closes #20070

Release Notes:

- Fixed issue where files wouldn't open from the file explorer.
- Fixed "Open a new workspace" option on the desktop entry right-click
menu.

Context:

Zed consists of two binaries:

- `zed` (CLI component, located at `crates/cli/main.rs`)
- `zed-editor` (GUI component, located at `crates/zed/main.rs`)

When `zed` is used in the terminal, it checks if an existing instance is
running. If one is found, it sends data via a socket to open the
specified file. Otherwise, it launches a new instance of `zed-editor`.
For more details, see the `detect` and `boot_background` functions in
`crates/cli/main.rs`.

Root Cause:

Install process creates directories like `.local/zed.app` and
`.local/zed-preview.app`, which contain desktop entries for the
corresponding release. For example, `.local/zed.app/share/applications`
contains `zed.desktop`.

This desktop entry includes a generic `Exec` field, which is correct by
default:

```sh
Comment=A high-performance, multiplayer code editor.
TryExec=zed
StartupNotify=true
```

The issue is in the `install.sh` script. This script copies the above
desktop file to the common directory for desktop entries
(.local/share/applications). During this process, it replaces the
`TryExec` value from `zed` with the exact binary path to avoid relying
on the shell's PATH resolution and to make it explicit.

However, replacement incorrectly uses the path for `zed-editor` instead
of the `zed` CLI binary. This results in not opening a file as if you
use `zed-editor` directly to do this it will throw `zed is already
running` error on production and open new instance on dev.

Note: This PR solves it for new users. For existing users, they will
either have to update `.desktop` file manually, or use `install.sh`
script again. I'm not aware of zed auto-update method, if it runs
`install.sh` under the hood.

Add an uninstall script (#21213)
Closes #14306

This looks at what #16660 did and install.sh script as a base for the
uninstall.sh script. The script is bundled with the cli by default
unless the cli/no-bundled-uninstall feature is selected which is done,
so package managers could build zed without bundling a useless feature
and increasing binary size.

I don't have capabilities to test this right now, so any help with that
is appreciated.

Release Notes:

- Added an uninstall script for Zed installations done via zed.dev. To
uninstall zed, run `zed --uninstall` via the CLI binary.

Improve dev experience for built-in prompts (#16413)
When launching Zed from the CLI via `cargo run`, we'll always prompt
load templates from the repo.

This restores behavior that I reverted last night in #16403.

Also, I've improved the `script/prompts link/unlink` workflow for
overriding prompts of your production copy of Zed. Zed now detects when
the overrides directory is created or removed, and does the right thing.
You can link and unlink repeatedly without restarting Zed.

danger: Don't look for #NNNN, as it's not specific enough (#16313)
This PR updates the regex we use to search for issues to not search for
`#NNNN`, as it's not specific enough.

It currently catches issue numbers from other repos, which are then
linked to random Zed issues/PRs that happen to have the same number:

<img width="935" alt="Screenshot 2024-08-15 at 3 50 29 PM"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/b779e503-3027-43e2-b355-e81d8d094694">

As well as catching PRs:

<img width="924" alt="Screenshot 2024-08-15 at 3 48 59 PM"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/6c2f7594-9234-4454-97da-5a33a1844892">

Given that:

1. We can't distinguish any given `#NNNN` as an issue _and_ can't ensure
it belongs to the Zed repo
2. Any issue/PR referenced as `#NNNN` will already create a backlink

It seems that looking for these is causing more noise than signal.

Introduce prompt override script and adjust names (#16094)
This PR introduces a new script for iterative development of prompt
overrides in Zed.

Just `script/prompts link` and your running Zed should start using
prompts from `zed/assets/prompts`. Use `script/prompts unlink` to undo.
You can also link with `script/prompts link --worktree` to store the
prompts to a `../zed_prompts` worktree that's a sibling of your repo, in
case you don't want to mess with your working copy. Just don't forget
about it!

Key changes:
- Add new `script/prompts` for managing prompt overrides
- Rename `prompt_templates_dir` to `prompt_overrides_dir` for clarity
- Update paths to use `~/.config/zed/prompt_overrides` instead of
`~/.config/zed/prompts/templates`
- Adjust `PromptBuilder` to use the new `prompt_overrides_dir` function

These changes simplify the process of customizing prompts and provide a
more intuitive naming convention for override-related functionality.

Link to pull requests in changelog notes (#15996)
This PR changes how we ask users to draft up PRs and how release note
generation happens.

We no longer force the user to create the markdown URL link, but we do
ask them to use the `closes` [GitHub magic
word](https://docs.github.com/en/issues/tracking-your-work-with-issues/linking-a-pull-request-to-an-issue)
to link the PR to an issue, so that the issue is closed automatically
when closing the PR.

As for the changelog release notes, we are no longer linking to the
issues, but the PR itself, which should contain the issue if a reader
wants to dive further back. This makes our output more consistent, as
every line will have a link, even if there is no issue associated, and
it removes the need for us to try to parse the issue url in the body to
try to correct mistakes in how they were forming Markdown urls - the PR
url is always returned in the request, which makes it easy. **Lastly,
it's just a lot less annoying to make the release notes.**

The new PR format will be:

```
Closes #ISSUE
Release Notes:
- Added/Fixed/Improved ...
```

The new script output format will be:

```
PR Title: theme: Use a non-transparent color for the fallback `title_bar.inactive_background`
Credit: ([#15709](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/15709); thanks [maxdeviant](https://github.com/maxdeviant))
Release Notes:
- linux: Changed the fallback color of `title_bar.inactive_background` to a non-transparent value.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PR Title: Skip over folded regions when iterating over multibuffer chunks
Credit: ([#15646](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/15646); thanks [osiewicz](https://github.com/osiewicz))
Release Notes:
- Fixed poor performance when editing in the assistant panel after inserting large files using slash commands
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
```

This still requires us to manually apply the credit line, but the line
is already fully formed, so this should still be faster than having to
manually create that line / fix any line where someone messed it up
(which was all the time). I would just automatically apply it to the
release notes, but sometimes we have multiple bullet points in a single
PR and no real structure is enforced, so I foresee doing anything
automatic breaking and needing manual adjustment.

Turns out that the existing CI step for Nightly did create the licenses
and they have been baked into X86 builds ever since, because our
builders are stateful.

On ARM machines, the licenses wouldn't exist in the binary because we
called `script/generate-licenses` too late in `scripts/bundle-linux`,
after the binary had been created.

This removes the duplication and generates the licenses once, before the
binary is created.

Fixes #14302.

Release Notes:

- Fixed "View Dependency Licenses" (or `zed: open licenses`) crashing on
Linux ARM machines.

```
The script fails to install zed on Arch Linux due to a missing
dependency, `jq`.
## My machine info
OS: Arch Linux
Kernel: 6.6.34-1-lts
WM: dwm
Terminal: kitty
CPU: Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics
GPU: AMD ATI 04:00.0 Lucienne
Memory: 16 GB
## Error Description
The error occurs when running the script in `script/install-linux`,
which is unable to find the `jq` package, which is not installed by
default on the machine.
## Solution
To resolve this issue, you can install `jq` independently by running
`sudo pacman -S jq`. Alternatively, I have updated script `script/linux`
to include `jq` as a dependency ([link to the
commit](2349ad111f)),
ensuring it is installed automatically when running the initial script
for system libraries.
Note that, contrary to the issue's text, we're still shipping a
version (v3.38.0) is higher than is presumably accessible on Ubuntu.
Dealing with missing arm architectures (#13349)
![image](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/19868292/341bf8c6-4586-4d51-8889-2c706dc98f6f)
"AArch64" and "ARM64" refer to the same thing.
AArch64 is the 64-bit state introduced in the [Armv8-A
architecture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture_family#Armv8-A).
The 32-bit state which is backwards compatible with Armv7-A and previous
32-bit Arm architectures is referred to as AArch32. Therefore the GNU
triplet for the 64-bit ISA is aarch64. The Linux kernel community
[chose](https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/7/6/624) to call their port of the
kernel to this architecture arm64 rather than aarch64, so that's where
some of the arm64 usage comes from.
The Apple-developed backend for AArch64 was called "ARM64" whereas the
LLVM community-developed backend was called "AArch64" (as it is the
canonical name for the 64-bit ISA). The two were merged [in
2014](https://www.phoronix.com/news/MTY5ODk) and the backend now is
called "AArch64".
Add Flatpak build system and support (#12006)
ping #6687
This is the third iteration of this PR ([v2
here](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/11949)) and uses a
different approach to the first two (the process wrapper lib was a
maintainability nightmare). While the first two attempted to spawn the
necessary processes using flatpak-spawn and host-spawn from the app
inside the sandbox, this version first spawns the cli binary which then
restart's itself *outside* of the sandbox using flatpak-spawn. The
restarted cli process than can call the bundled app binary normally,
with no need for flatpak-spawn because it is already outside of the
sandbox. This is done instead of keeping the cli in the sandbox because
ipc becomes very difficult and broken when trying to do it across the
sandbox.
Gnome software (example using nightly channel and release notes
generated using the script):
