agent_ui: Put fast mode behind confirmation popover (#57482)
It look like this:

The idea is to avoid people turning on fast mode without understanding
the financial implications. It also clarifiers (in the BYOK case) why
they might not see a difference between fast mode enabled and disabled.

Make file paths in backticks clickable in agent panel (#57303)
When the agent mentions a file path inside `backticks` (e.g. ``
`src/main.rs` `` or `` `src/main.rs:42` ``), the rendered code span now
becomes a clickable link in the agent panel. Clicking opens the
referenced file in the workspace, jumping to the right line and column
when present.

## How it works

- **Shared path resolution.** Extracted `OpenTarget` and the
workspace/worktree resolution logic out of
`terminal_view::terminal_path_like_target` into a new
`workspace::path_link` module so both the terminal and the agent panel
can use the same code. Includes a `sanitize_path_text` helper ported
from the terminal's URL/punctuation handling. Pure refactor — terminal
behavior is unchanged.
- **`markdown` crate hook.** Added
`MarkdownElement::on_code_span_link(callback)`. When the callback
returns `Some(url)` for a given code span's contents, the existing
`push_link` machinery wires up cmd-hover, hit testing, and the existing
`on_url_click` callback. When it returns `None`, the code span renders
as before. The hook is opt-in, so `markdown` stays workspace-agnostic.
- **Agent panel wiring.** `render_agent_markdown` constructs an
`AgentCodeSpanResolver` that snapshots the project's visible worktree
entries plus their file extensions. `try_resolve` does a cheap
synchronous heuristic check (path must contain `/`/`\` or end in an
extension present in the workspace, can't be a URL, can't be all digits,
etc.) and then looks the candidate up in the per-worktree
`HashSet<Arc<RelPath>>`. On a hit it returns a `MentionUri::File` or
`MentionUri::Selection` URI, which the existing `thread_view::open_link`
already knows how to open at the right line.

## Edge cases handled

- Code spans inside fenced code blocks stay plain (gated on
`builder.code_block_stack.is_empty()`, matching how regular markdown
links behave).
- Trailing prose punctuation (`` `src/main.rs.` ``) is stripped before
lookup.
- Identifiers like `` `String` ``, `` `await` ``, `` `npm run dev` ``
stay plain — they don't pass the path-like heuristic.
- Cross-platform path separators handled via the per-worktree
`PathStyle`.

## Tests

- `crates/markdown` — unit test asserting code spans become links when
the callback returns `Some`, and stay plain when it doesn't.
- `crates/agent_ui` — unit test for `AgentCodeSpanResolver::try_resolve`
covering hits with and without a `:line` suffix, misses, identifiers,
and trailing punctuation.
- Existing `terminal_view` tests cover the moved resolution code
(unchanged behavior).

## Notes

- There's currently a temporary `log::info!` in
`AgentCodeSpanResolver::try_resolve` that reports per-call worktree-walk
timing and a cumulative total. Kept in for now to verify the feature
isn't being called excessively during streaming renders. Can be removed
before merge.
- Resolution is sync-only against worktree entries; absolute paths
outside the workspace are not resolved (would require an async re-render
path).

Closes AI-277

Replace Rules UI with Skills creation UI (#56924)
Replaces the legacy Rules creation UI with a focused "New Skill"
creation window when the `SkillsFeatureFlag` is on.

The new `skills_library` crate provides a single-skill form with:
- Name, Description, and Body fields (placeholders double as labels)
- Live validation matching the SKILL.md spec (name: 1–64 lowercase +
digits + hyphens, no leading/trailing hyphen; description: non-empty,
≤1024 chars)
- A scope dropdown listing every local worktree in the originating
workspace plus "Global"
- An Optional Parameters card with the `disable-model-invocation`
checkbox
- Save writes `<scope>/.agents/skills/<name>/SKILL.md` via
`serde_yaml_ng` (YAML-safe escaping), refuses to overwrite existing
skills, shows a success toast in the originating workspace, then closes
the window

The "Rules" entry in the agent panel triple-dot menu is renamed to
"Skills" when the flag is on. The existing `cmd-alt-l` keyboard shortcut
still works: `AgentPanel::deploy_rules_library` reroutes to
`deploy_skills_library` when the flag is on, so any persisted keymaps
and the menu's automatic shortcut lookup keep functioning without
changes to the default keymap files.

The old `rules_library` crate is intentionally left in place for this PR
— once the flag rolls out and the few remaining `OpenRulesLibrary {
prompt_to_select }` call sites (in thread_view link handlers and
@-mention crease) are migrated to an "open existing skill" flow, a
follow-up can delete the crate entirely.

15 unit tests cover the validation rules, frontmatter formatting
(including YAML-special-character round-tripping), and disk write
behavior (creates directory, refuses overwrite).

Closes AI-247

Use the announcement toast for skills support (#56873)
Closes AI-244

This PR changes the approach for announcing skills support. It uses the
announcement toast, the same thing used for parallel agents, which
observes a specific version number to be displayed. I ended up
simplifying things a bit by thinking we could rely on documentation for
more detailed information (with more extensive paths and whatnot).

Removes the `skills` feature flag now that Skills are ready to ship to

calls from the agent's skills tests.

Hide Rules UI when Skills feature flag is enabled (#56782)
Hides the legacy Rules surfaces when the `skills` feature flag is
enabled, since Rules are surfaced through the Skills UI in that case:

- The **Rules** entry in the agent panel's ellipsis (triple-dot)
dropdown menu is hidden.
- The `assistant: open rules library` command palette action is hidden.

The `@rules` autocomplete in the chat input is intentionally left alone
for now.

### Implementation notes

`cx.has_flag::<SkillsFeatureFlag>()` reads from a global feature-flag
store that is populated asynchronously from the server:

- **Command palette**: `update_command_palette_filter` is already re-run
via `cx.on_flags_ready` once flags arrive, so the filter is reapplied
with the correct value. No new wiring needed.
- **Dropdown menu**: the popover's menu closure runs on every open, so
the latest flag value is reflected at click time.

Migrate Rules to global Skills and AGENTS.md (#56672)
Adds a one-time, idempotent startup migration that moves every user Rule
out of the `PromptStore` LMDB database into the new Skills + AGENTS.md
world, in a single pass:

- **Non-Default Rules → global Skills.** Each one becomes
`~/.agents/skills/<slug>/SKILL.md` with `disable-model-invocation:
true`, preserving the original behavior that non-Default Rules were only
ever invoked when the user named them. They're now invokable via
`/skill-name` (and still `@`-mentions).
- **Default Rules → global AGENTS.md.** Each one is appended to
`paths::agents_file()` (e.g. `~/.config/zed/AGENTS.md` on macOS/Linux,
`%APPDATA%\Zed\AGENTS.md` on Windows) under an `## H2` heading
containing the rule's title. Default Rules used to be auto-included in
every conversation; the global AGENTS.md is loaded into the system
prompt of every conversation, so the behavior is preserved.
- **Customized built-in prompts → global AGENTS.md** (currently just the
commit-message prompt). If the user has edited a built-in away from
Zed's shipped `default_content()`, the edited body is appended at the
top of the AGENTS.md block. Uncustomized built-ins (still on the shipped
default) are skipped so we don't pollute AGENTS.md with text the user
never wrote.

The migration is gated on the `skills` feature flag — users without the
flag never have their Rules touched in any way. A single global KVP flag
(`rules_to_skills_migration_done`) short-circuits the migration on
subsequent launches, so it runs at most once per machine even across
release channels. A process-lifetime `AtomicBool` guard additionally
prevents racing duplicate spawns when the underlying `cx.on_flags_ready`
callback fires multiple times at startup.

Migration is intentionally non-destructive: rule rows in the LMDB
database stay in place. Users can still see and edit them through the
existing UI, and a downgrade to a Zed build without skills support won't
lose anything.

Slug generation (`agent_skills::slugify_skill_name`) lowercases ASCII
letters, turns spaces into dashes, and drops every other
non-alphanumeric character entirely — so `foo!bar` becomes `foobar`, not
`foo-bar`. `&` is special-cased to become `and` (so `rock&roll` →
`rock-and-roll`). Slug collisions and pre-existing skill directories are
handled by appending `-2`, `-3`, etc.

A title-bar onboarding banner ("Skills have replaced Rules") surfaces
for every user on the `skills` feature flag. Clicking it opens a small
`AlertModal`-based explainer that summarizes the two destinations and
points users at the new `/skill-name` slash command (and notes that
`@`-mentions still work).

Move the worktree picker to the title bar + make it always visible (#54183)
This PR makes Zed only have one worktree picker, as opposed to a flavor
of it in the title bar and another in the agent panel. It then moves it
to the title bar, making it always present, so that its trigger is
separate from the branch picker (which now contains only two views:
branches and stashes). For the worktree picker, I'm mostly favoring the
behavior we've introduced in the agent-panel-flavored version.

It also updates the title bar settings migration to use the JSON
`migrate_settings` helper instead of a shallow Tree-sitter rewrite, so
old `show_branch_icon = true` values are promoted to
`show_branch_status_icon = true` across root, platform, release-channel,
and profile settings scopes.

- [x] Move worktree creation logic to the `git_ui` crate to make this
more generic and less agent-specific
- [x] Double-check the remote use case and ensure nothing broke there
- [x] Improve the UX for the detached HEAD state; better invite people
to create a branch
- [x] Migrate `show_branch_icon = true` to `show_branch_status_icon =
true` across nested settings scopes

Suggested .rules additions

When migrating renamed settings keys that can appear in platform
overrides, release-channel overrides, or profiles, prefer the JSON
`migrations::migrate_settings` helper over shallow Tree-sitter key
rewrites unless tests explicitly cover every nested scope that can
contain the key.

Release Notes:

- Improved migration of the title bar branch status icon setting.

Rename Archive view to Thread History (#54075)
This renames the Archive view to Thread History in all user-facing
surfaces. The concept of archiving a thread (the verb/state) remains
unchanged — only the view that lists all threads is renamed, since it
shows both active and archived entries.

## Changes

- Rename `ViewAllThreads` action → `ToggleThreadHistory`
- Context-sensitive tooltip: "Show Thread History" / "Hide Thread
History"
- Update action doc comment to reference "history" instead of "archive
view"
- Telemetry event: `Thread History Viewed`
- `SerializedSidebarView::Archive` → `History` (with `#[serde(alias =
"Archive")]` for backward compat)
- Add a Lucide-based clock icon adapted to 16×16 / 1.2px stroke
- Switch the history toggle button to use the new clock icon
- Update all three platform keymaps

agent: Add ability to import threads from other channels (#54002)
Users have been testing the threads sidebar on Nightly and Preview but
once we release the feature we expect many of these users to move back
to Stable. As it stands right now, they would lose the threads they'd
been working on. This PR adds a way to import these threads.

- [x] Add `agent: import threads from other channels` action to the
command palette.
- This can be always available for users that switch between channels
regularly.
- [x] Add tests for import behavior
- [x] Add a button that disappears after using it to make importing more
discoverable for when users first switch.

Release Notes:

- Added an action to the command palette that imports threads from other
Zed release channels into the current one.

agent_ui: Improve the new thread worktree UX (#53941)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/53262

- Remove the ability to pick a branch from the agent panel; delegate
this to the title bar picker
- Make the worktree creation earger, just as you selected whether you
want to create it from main or current branch
- Remove flicker when creating a new worktree and switching to a
previously existing one
- Improve some UI stuff: how we display that a worktree is
creating/loading, the branch and worktree icons, etc.
- Fixed a bug where worktrees in a detached HEAD state wouldn't show up
in the worktree pickers

A big part of the diff of this PR is the removal of everything involved
with the `StartThreadIn` enum/the set up involved in only creating the
worktree by the time of the first prompt send.

Release Notes:

- Agent: Improved and simplified the UX of creating threads in Git
worktrees.
- Git: Fixed a bug where worktrees in a detached HEAD state wouldn't
show up in the worktree picker.

Start new git worktrees in detached HEAD state (#53840)
Create worktrees in detached HEAD state, then attempt to check out the
requested branch. If the checkout fails (e.g. the branch is already in
use by another worktree), log a warning and stay in detached HEAD state
instead of showing an error to the user.

This simplifies the worktree creation flow by:
- Removing the occupied-branch fallback logic that would generate random
branch names
- Always using `CreateWorktreeTarget::Detached` for worktree creation
- Attempting branch checkout as a best-effort post-creation step
- Updating the branch picker UI to reflect the new behavior

Release Notes:

- Threads now start git worktrees in detached HEAD state if branch is in
use or unspecified, instead of generating a random branch name.

agent_ui: Unify draft and background threads into retained threads (#53737)
> **Foundation PRs:** #53732, #53733, #53734 — These three draft PRs
contain the base refactors (retained workspaces, agent panel overlay
split, ThreadId introduction) that this PR builds on.

## Goal

Remove `DraftId` and merge `draft_threads` + `background_threads` into a
single `retained_threads: HashMap<ThreadId, Entity<ConversationView>>`
in `AgentPanel`. A draft is just a thread that hasn't sent its first
message — no separate identity or storage needed.

## Changes

### agent_panel.rs
- Remove `DraftId` / `DraftIdCounter` / the `Global` impl
- Merge the two maps into `retained_threads`
- Add `thread_id: ThreadId` field to `BaseView::AgentThread`
- Rename methods: `create_draft` → `create_thread`, `activate_draft` →
`activate_retained_thread`, `remove_draft` → `remove_thread`, etc.
- Replace `clear_active_thread` with `show_or_create_empty_draft`
- Update `update_thread_work_dirs` to sync `ThreadMetadataStore` paths
when worktrees change
- Keep `load_agent_thread(...)` cleanup so activating a real thread
removes empty retained drafts

### sidebar.rs
- Remove `active_entry` derivation from `rebuild_contents` (was racing
with deferred effects)
- Add `sync_active_entry_from_panel` called from event handlers instead
- Simplify `ActiveEntry` — remove `ThreadActivation` struct, make
`session_id` optional
- Move `seen_thread_ids` to global scope (was per-group, causing
duplicate thread entries)
- Remove dead code: `clear_draft`, `render_draft_thread`
- Generalize `pending_remote_thread_activation` into
`pending_thread_activation` so all persisted-thread activations suppress
fallback draft reconciliation
- Set the activation guard before local persisted-thread activation
switches workspaces
- Make `reconcile_groups(...)` bail while a persisted-thread activation
is in flight
- On `ActiveViewChanged`, clear empty group drafts as soon as a pending
persisted-thread activation resolves

### thread_metadata_store.rs
- Make `ThreadMetadata.title` an `Option<SharedString>` with
`display_title()` fallback
- Add `update_worktree_paths` for batched path updates when project
worktrees change

### Other crates
- Update all `ThreadMetadata` construction sites and title display sites
across `agent_ui` and `sidebar`

## Fallback draft invariant

This PR now tightens the retained-thread invariant around fallback
drafts vs real thread activation/restoration:

- Fallback drafts are always empty
- User-created drafts worth preserving are non-empty
- While a persisted thread is being activated/restored/loaded, sidebar
reconciliation must not create an empty fallback draft for that target
group/workspace
- Once the real thread becomes active, empty fallback drafts in that
target group are removed

This is enforced by the sidebar-side activation guard plus existing
`AgentPanel` empty-draft cleanup after real-thread load.

## Tests

Added and/or kept focused sidebar regression coverage for:

-
`test_confirm_on_historical_thread_in_new_project_group_opens_real_thread`
-
`test_unarchive_into_inactive_existing_workspace_does_not_leave_active_draft`
-
`test_unarchive_after_removing_parent_project_group_restores_real_thread`
- `test_pending_thread_activation_suppresses_reconcile_draft_creation`

Focused test runs:

- `cargo test -p sidebar activate_archived_thread -- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar unarchive -- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar archive_last_thread_on_linked_worktree --
--nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar
test_confirm_on_historical_thread_in_new_project_group_opens_real_thread
-- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar
test_unarchive_into_inactive_existing_workspace_does_not_leave_active_draft
-- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar
test_unarchive_after_removing_parent_project_group_restores_real_thread
-- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar
test_pending_thread_activation_suppresses_reconcile_draft_creation --
--nocapture`

## Test fix

Fixed flaky `test_backfill_sets_kvp_flag` — added per-App `AppDatabase`
isolation in `setup_backfill_test` so backfill tests no longer share a
static in-memory DB.

Wire up worktree archival on thread archive and restoration on unarchive (#53215)
Connect the git API and archived worktree data model to the sidebar's
archive/unarchive flow:

- Add `thread_worktree_archive` module: orchestrates the full archive
cycle (WIP commits, DB records, git refs, worktree deletion) and restore
cycle (detached worktree creation, reset to recover staged/unstaged
state, branch restoration)
- Integrate into sidebar: `archive_thread` now persists worktree state
before cleanup; `activate_archived_thread` restores worktrees via git
with targeted path replacement for multi-root threads
- Add pending worktree restore UI state with spinner and cancel button
- Show toast on restore failure instead of silent log
- Switch to surviving workspace when archiving active thread whose
workspace will be deleted
- Deserialize persisted `project_group_keys` on window restore
- Guard `cleanup_empty_workspaces` against dropped entities
- Await rollback DB operations instead of fire-and-forget

Part 3 of 3 in the persist-worktree stack. Stacked on #53214. This wires
up parts 1 and 2.

Release Notes:

- Added worktree state preservation when archiving agent threads,
automatically restoring staged and unstaged changes when the thread is
unarchived

Remove notification panel (#50204)
After chat functionality was removed, this panel became redundant. It

agent_ui: Set max-width for thread view content (#52730)
This PR adds a configurable max-width to the agent panel. This will be
particularly useful when opting into an agentic-first layout where the
thread will be at the center of the UI (with the panel most likely
full-screen'ed, which is why I'm also adding here the button to make it
full screen in the toolbar). The default max-width is 850, which is a
bit bigger than the one generally considered as a standard (~66
characters wide, which usually sums up to 750 pixels).

Release Notes:

- Agent: Added a max-width to the thread view for better readability,
particularly when the panel is zoomed in.

agent_panel: Add new thread git worktree/branch pickers (#52979)
This PR allows users to create a new thread based off a git worktree
that already exists or has a custom name. User's can also choose what
branch they want the newly generated worktree to be based off of.

The UI still needs some polish, but I'm merging this early to get the
team using this before our preview launch. I'll be active today and
tomorrow before launch to fix any nits we have with the UI.

Functionality of this feature works! And I have a basic test to prevent
regressions

Display agent-powered merge conflict resolution in the status bar (#53033)
Follow up to https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/49807

Previously, when there were multiple conflicts across the codebase, we
would pop a toast at the bottom right corner of the UI. A toast seemed
like a functional idea because it'd be visible from any state of the app
and thus it'd be a good place to expose the button that allows you to
quickly prompt the agent to resolve all conflicts, as opposed to
creating a thread for each individual one. However, the toast was met
with some negative (and correct) feedback, mostly because it is
interruptive, and thus can sometimes block very relevant surfaces, like
either the agent panel itself or the Git commit area.

Therefore, in this PR, I'm removing the toast and adding a button in the
status bar instead; a bit more minimal, not interruptive, and a common
place for other items that might require your attention. The status bar
can be quite busy these days, though; we can display diagnostics, LSP
status, and file names in there; conscious of that. But it felt like it
could work given this button is such a transient one that you can either
easily manually dismiss or wait for it to be auto-dismissed as you or
the agent resolves the merge conflicts.

/>

Release Notes:

- Git: Improved how we surface the affordance to resolve codebase-wide
merge conflicts with the agent in the UI.
- Agent: Added a setting to control whether or not the button to resolve
merge conflicts with the agent should be displayed.

agent_settings: Add always_play_sound_when_agent_done setting (#52284)
This PR changes `agent.play_sound_when_agent_done` from a boolean to an
enum with three options:

- `never` (default)
- `when_hidden`
- `always`

In Settings → Agent, this now appears as a _Play Sound When Agent Done_
dropdown.

Existing settings are migrated automatically:
- `false` → `never`
- `true` → `always`

### Why

A boolean only allowed the sound to be on or off. This change gives
users clearer control over when the agent notification sound should
play.

### Verification

- Added a migrator test for this setting change.
- Manually tested the settings UI, settings migration and the feature

Release Notes:

- Added new agent notification sound options
