There are two unreasonable coupling account for this issue, the coupling
of `use_tree_sitter` with `languge_aware` in
7892b93279/crates/editor/src/element.rs (L3820-L3822)
and the coupling of `language_aware` with `diagnostics` in
7892b93279/crates/language/src/buffer.rs (L3736-L3746)
Because of these couplings, when the editor stops using Tree-sitter
highlighting when `"semantic_tokens"` set to `"full"`, it also
accidentally stops fetching diagnostic information. This is why error
and warning underlines disappear.
I’ve fixed this by adding a separate `use_tree_sitter` parameter to
`highlighted_chunks`. This way, we can keep `language_aware` true to get
the diagnostic data we need, but still decide whether or not to apply
Tree-sitter highlights. I chose to fix this at the `highlighted_chunks`
level because I’m worried that changing the logic in the deeper layers
of the DisplayMap or Buffer might have too many side effects that are
hard to predict. This approach feels like a safer way to solve the
problem.

## Context
### Background
Currently, a multibuffer consists of an arbitrary list of
anchor-delimited excerpts from individual buffers. Excerpt ranges for a
fixed buffer are permitted to overlap, and can appear in any order in
the multibuffer, possibly separated by excerpts from other buffers.
However, in practice all code that constructs multibuffers does so using
the APIs defined in the `path_key` submodule of the `multi_buffer` crate
(`set_excerpts_for_path` etc.) If you only use these APIs, the resulting
multibuffer will maintain the following invariants:
- All excerpts for the same buffer appear contiguously in the
multibuffer
- Excerpts for the same buffer cannot overlap
- Excerpts for the same buffer appear in order
- The placement of the excerpts for a specific buffer in the multibuffer
are determined by the `PathKey` passed to `set_excerpts_for_path`. There
is exactly one `PathKey` per buffer in the multibuffer
### Purpose of this PR
This PR changes the multibuffer so that the invariants maintained by the
`path_key` APIs *always* hold. It's no longer possible to construct a
multibuffer with overlapping excerpts, etc. The APIs that permitted
this, like `insert_excerpts_with_ids_after`, have been removed in favor
of the `path_key` suite.
The main upshot of this is that given a `text::Anchor` and a
multibuffer, it's possible to efficiently figure out the unique excerpt
that includes that anchor, if any:

And in the other direction, given a `multi_buffer::Anchor`, we can look
at its `text::Anchor` to locate the excerpt that contains it. That means
we don't need an `ExcerptId` to create or resolve
`multi_buffer::Anchor`, and in fact we can delete `ExcerptId` entirely,
so that excerpts no longer have any identity outside their
`Range<text::Anchor>`.
There are a large number of changes to `editor` and other downstream
crates as a result of removing `ExcerptId` and multibuffer APIs that
assumed it.
### Other changes
There are some other improvements that are not immediate consequences of
that big change, but helped make it smoother. Notably:
- The `buffer_id` field of `text::Anchor` is no longer optional.
`text::Anchor::{MIN, MAX}` have been removed in favor of
`min_for_buffer`, etc.
- `multi_buffer::Anchor` is now a three-variant enum (inlined slightly):

That means it's no longer possible to unconditionally access the
`text_anchor` field, which is good because most of the places that were

correctly resolves min/max to the start of the first excerpt or the end
of the last excerpt:

This extracts a `language_core` crate from the existing `language`
crate, and creates a `grammars` data crate. The goal is to separate
tree-sitter grammar infrastructure, language configuration, and LSP
adapter types from the heavier buffer/editor integration layer in
`language`.
## Motivation
The `language` crate pulls in `text`, `theme`, `settings`, `rpc`,
`task`, `fs`, `clock`, `sum_tree`, and `fuzzy` — all of which are needed
for buffer integration (`Buffer`, `SyntaxMap`, `Outline`,
`DiagnosticSet`) but not for grammar parsing or language configuration.
Extracting the core types lets downstream consumers depend on
`language_core` without pulling in the full integration stack.

Many editors such as vim and emacs support "modelines", a comment at the
beginning of the file that allows the file type to be explicitly
specified along with per-file specific settings
- The amount of configurations, style and settings mapping cannot be
handled in one go, so this opens up a lot of potential improvements.
- I left out the possiblity to have "zed" specific modelines for now,
but this could be potentially interesting.
- Mapping the mode or filetype to zed language names isn't obvious
either. We may want to make it configurable.
This is my first contribution to zed, be kind. I struggled a bit to find
the right place to add those settings. I use a similar approach as done
with editorconfig (merge_with_editorconfig). There might be better ways.

This PR adjusts the default panel layout for anyone on the agent v2
feature flag.
Note that this changes the right status bar items to show in reverse
priority order, and then adjusts priorities so that the "project
management" buttons appear to the right, and the outline panel appears
to the far left. The reversal "cancels out" most of the priority
changes, except the outline panel and the collab panel.

This action already exists in three other context menus (editor

Adds a platform-specific entry to the tab context menu:
- **macOS:** "Reveal in Finder"
- **Windows:** "Reveal in File Explorer"
- **Linux:** "Reveal in File Manager"
Placed after "Copy Relative Path" and before "Pin Tab". Gated behind
`is_local` (including WSL with host interop) to match the project
panel's behavior. Uses the existing `project.reveal_path()`
infrastructure, which handles platform-specific file manager invocation
and WSL path conversion.

Every major editor has this in the tab context menu:
- VS Code: "Reveal in Finder" (macOS) / "Reveal in File Explorer"
(Windows)
- JetBrains IDEs: Right-click tab -> "Open in" -> "Finder"

Zed already has this in the editor body right-click menu (`Cmd-K R`),
project panel (`Alt-Cmd-R`), and outline panel. The tab context menu was
the only place it was missing.

The DB crate's macro and API was changed to fix flakiness observed in
the MultiWorkspace tests when run locally. This flakiness was caused by
a shared `static LazyLock`, that caused concurrent test runs to interact
with the same underlying in-memory database. This flakiness wasn't
possible on CI due to it's usage of `cargo nextest`, whose
process-per-test approach masked this problem.
Essentially, I've changed the `static_connection` macro to remove the
static database variable and redone the internal model. Now, all
database types are thin wrappers around a generic `AppDatabase`. The
`AppDatabase` collects all of the individual table's migrations via the
`inventory` crate, and so only runs the migrations once on startup,
rather than a dozen times on startup.
The new API requires a `cx` so that we can replace the database returned
at runtime, rather than relying exclusively on a process-global
thread-local. However, we are still using a `static LazyLock` so that we
only need to take an `&App`, instead of an `&mut App`. These databases
types are `Clone + Send + Sync`, so you can easily capture-and-move the
database into background tasks and other places that don't have a `cx`.
For tests that require database isolation, it is now possible to set
their own database in init. See
[`workspace::init_test`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-041673bbd1947a35d45945636c0055429dfc8b5985faf93f8a8a960c9ad31e28R13610),
for the flakiness fix.
Best part, this change should be entirely compiler driven, so the Zed
agent was able to make the app-wide refactor easily.

This PR adds the ability to open local terminals when working in remote
projects. When working in a remote (often actually remoting into a local
container) I always need to run separate terminals outside Zed so I can
run local build tools, scripts, agents, etc. for the related project.
I'd like to be able to run all of these in the same Zed window and this
adds that ability via one-off local terminals.
## Changes
Adds an optional `local` parameter to terminal commands. When set to
`true`, creates a local shell on your machine instead of connecting to
the remote.
### Implementation
- Added `force_local` parameter to terminal creation logic
- Created `create_local_terminal()` method that bypasses remote client
- Updated terminal actions (`NewTerminal`, `NewCenterTerminal`) to
accept optional `local: bool` field (defaults to `false`)

Problem:
- The status bar’s pending keystroke indicator (shown next to --NORMAL--
in Vim mode) didn’t clear when focus moved to another context, e.g.
hitting g in the editor then clicking the Git panel. The keymap state
correctly canceled the prefix, but observers that render the indicator
never received a “pending input changed” notification, so the UI kept
showing stale prefixes until a new keystroke occurred.
Fix:
- The change introduces a `pending_input_changed_queued` flag and a new
helper `notify_pending_input_if_needed` which will flushes the queued
notification as soon as we have an App context. The
`pending_input_changed` now resets the flag after notifying subscribers.

This mostly affects the collab and outline panels for now. It has always
been a bit weird that the search field was at the bottom of the panel,
even more so because in both cases, you can _arrow down_ to start
navigating the list with your keyboard. So, with the search at the
bottom, you'd arrow down and get to the top of the list, which was very
strange. Now, with it at the top, it not only looks better but it is
also more generally consistent with other surfaces in the app, like
pickers, the settings UI, rules library, etc. Most search fields are
always at the top.

Fixed outline panel space key behavior by removing duplicate toggle call
The `open_selected_entry` function in `outline_panel.rs` was incorrectly
calling `self.toggle_expanded(&selected_entry, window, cx)` in addition
to its primary logic, causing the space key to both open/close entries
AND toggle their expanded state. Removed the redundant `toggle_expanded`
call to achieve the intended behavior.

Problem:
Multi-cursor edits/selections in multi-buffers view were jumping to
incorrect locations after toggling buffer folds. When users created
multiple selections across different buffers in a multi-buffer view
(like project search results) and then folded one of the buffers,
subsequent text insertion would either:
1. Insert text at wrong locations (like at the top of the first unfolded
buffer)
2. Replace the entire content in some buffers instead of inserting at
the intended cursor positions
3. Create orphaned selections that caused corruption in the editing
experience
The issue seems to happen because when a buffer gets folded in a
multi-buffer view, the existing selections associated with that buffer
become invalid anchor points.
Solution:
1. Selection Cleanup on Buffer Folding
- Added `remove_selections_from_buffer()` method that filters out all
selections from a buffer when it gets folded
- This prevents invalid selections from corrupting subsequent editing
operations
- Includes edge case handling: if all selections are removed (all
buffers folded), it creates a default selection at the start of the

2. Unfolding buffers before editing
- Added `unfold_buffers_with_selections()` call in `handle_input()`
ensures buffers with active selections are automatically unfolded before
editing
- This helps in fixing an edge case (covered in the tests) where, if you
fold all buffers in a multi-buffer view, and try to insert text in a
selection, it gets unfolded before the edit happens. Without this, the
inserted text would override the entire buffer content.
- If we don't care about this edge case, we could remove this method. I
find it ok to add since we already trigger buffer unfolding after edits
with `Event::ExcerptsEdited`.

- Fixed multi-cursor edits jumping to incorrect locations after toggling
buffer folds in multi-buffer views (e.g, project search)
- Multi-cursor selections now properly handle buffer folding/unfolding
operations
- Text insertion no longer occurs at the wrong positions when buffers
are folded during multi-cursor editing
- Eliminated content replacement bugs where entire buffer contents were
incorrectly overwritten
- Added safe fallback behavior when all buffers in a multi-buffer view
are folded

I love keybindings.
I spend way to much time thinking about them.
I also REALLY like working in Zed.
so far, however, I have found the key context system in Zed to be less
flexible than in VSCode.
the HUGE context that is available in VSCode helps you create
keybindings for very specific targeted scenarios.
the tree like structure of the Zed key context means you loose some
information as focus moves throughout the application.
For example, it is not currently possible to create a keybinding in the
editor that will only work when one of the Docks is open, or if a
specific dock is open.
this would be useful in implementing solutions to ideas like #24222
we already have an action for moving focus to the dock, and we have an
action for opening/closing the dock, but to my knowledge (very limited
lol) we cannot determine if that dock *is open* unless we are focused on
it.
I think it is possible to create a more flexible key binding system by
adding more context information to the higher up context ancestors.
while:

may seem redundant, it actually communicates fundamentally different
information than:
```
Workspace right_dock=GitPanel
Pane
Editor
```
the first says "the GitPanel is in the right hand dock AND IT IS
FOCUSED",
while the second means "Focus is on the Editor, and the GitPanel just
happens to be open in the right hand dock"
This change adds a new set of identifiers to the `Workspace` key_context
that will indicate which docks are open and what is the specific panel
that is currently visible in that dock.
examples:
- `left_dock=ProjectPanel`
- `bottom_dock=TerminalPanel`
- `right_dock=GitPanel`
in my testing the following types of keybindings seem to be supported
with this change:

the persistent_name values for `ProjectPanel` and `OutlinePanel` needed
to be updated to not have a space in them in order to pass the
`Identifier` check. all the other Panels already had names that did not
include spaces, so it just makes these conform with the other ones.
I think this is a great place to start with adding more context
identifiers and i think this type of additional information will make it
possible to create really dynamic keybindings!

This PR re-applies the initial
[PR](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/30840). As it was closed
because it was hard to land, because of the many conflicts. This PR
re-applies the changes for it.
In several cases we were creating multiple display_map
snapshots within the same root-level function call.
Creating a display_map snapshot is quite slow, and in some
cases we were creating the snapshot multiple times.
