recent_projects: Allow bulk deleting entries without scroll jumping (#54777)
Closes #52292

This PR preserves the scroll offset of the List used in Recent Projects
while deleting items. It does that by:
- Adding the `is_scrolled_to_end` method to the GPUI list, which helps
us determine where the new selection should be, since it depends on
whether items are taking the deleted slot from below or above.
- Adding `ScrollBehavior` to `update_matches`, which lets you preserve
the scroll offset even for `List` (not `UniformList`) after a reset.

- Fixed the recent projects list jumping to the top after deleting a
project, so you can now bulk-delete entries by repeatedly clicking the
delete icon or pressing the keybind.

fuzzy_nucleo: Add strings module and route several pickers through it (#54123)
Stacked on top of #54112
This is part 2 of 3 towards #51197
More details from the original PR #53551

This PR includes the changes from #54112 , im not sure how to avoid
that, my understanding is that after that one is merged, this PR can be
rebased onto main and everything will be correct. You can also view the
version of this that does reflect the changes more directly here:
https://github.com/feitreim/zed/pull/1

## Changes

In this PR I added a more general string matching functionality to
`fuzzy_nucleo`, in order to have proper testing for this, I also changed
the command palette, tab switching picker, branch picker, and recent
projects picker to use this new implementation. I think the command
palette change in particular is awesome, just super nice to vaguely
gesture at the command i want and have it pop right up.

The main change here and departure from
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/37123 is realizing that the
primary reason for the regressions is actually how nucleo handles smart
case, the old `fuzzy` crate only uses the smart case argument to score
things differently, while nucleo actually filters on the case, eg. with
smart case query "Apple" wouldnt match "apple". To get around this we
always pass `CaseMatching::Ignore` to nucleo and implement the same
score modifications from fuzzy in our code.

There is a performance cost to that, of course, but from my testing it
is fairly static, not growing as the size increases, so maybe a query
takes 35 µs instead of 25 µs, but a query that takes 800 µs will only
take 820 µs.

Benchmark:
| kind | query | size | nucleo | fuzzy | nucleo/fuzzy |
  |---|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
  | string | 1-word | 100 | 9.15 µs | 24.6 µs | 0.37× |
  | string | 1-word | 1000 | 150.2 µs | 207.2 µs | 0.72× |
  | string | 1-word | 10000 | 1.34 ms | 2.07 ms | 0.65× |
  | string | 2-word | 100 | 5.16 µs | 2.94 µs | 1.75× |
  | string | 2-word | 1000 | 29.0 µs | 11.0 µs | 2.63× |
  | string | 2-word | 10000 | 210.6 µs | 55.5 µs | 3.79× |
  | string | 4-word | 100 | 2.57 µs | 2.33 µs | 1.10× |
  | string | 4-word | 1000 | 6.98 µs | 5.85 µs | 1.19× |
  | string | 4-word | 10000 | 20.0 µs | 12.0 µs | 1.66× |

When I added the 4-word queries to the benchmarks I was actually really
concerned that the performance would be awful, making it unsuitable for
the command palette especially. However, I think due to the CharBag
pre-filtering when the query is longer, the performance is actually way
better than the 2 word case.

Introduce MVP Dev Containers support (#44442)
Partially addresses #11473

MVP of dev containers with the following capabilities:

- If in a project with `.devcontainer/devcontainer.json`, a pop-up
notification will ask if you want to open the project in a dev
container. This can be dismissed:
<img width="1478" height="1191" alt="Screenshot 2025-12-08 at 3 15
23 PM"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ec2e20d6-28ec-4495-8f23-4c1d48a9ce78"
/>
- Similarly, if a `devcontainer.json` file is in the project, you can
open a devcontainer (or go the devcontainer.json file for further
editing) via the `open remote` modal:

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/61f2fdaa-2808-4efc-994c-7b444a92c0b1

*Limitations*

This is a first release, and comes with some limitations:
- Zed extensions are not managed in `devcontainer.json` yet. They will
need to be installed either on host or in the container. Host +
Container sync their extensions, so there is not currently a concept of
what is installed in the container vs what is installed on host: they
come from the same list of manifests
- This implementation uses the [devcontainer
CLI](https://github.com/devcontainers/cli) for its control plane. Hence,
it does not yet support the `forwardPorts` directive. A single port can
be opened with `appPort`. See reference in docs
[here](https://github.com/devcontainers/cli/tree/main/example-usage#how-the-tool-examples-work)
- Editing devcontainer.json does not automatically cause the dev
container to be rebuilt. So if you add features, change images, etc, you
will need to `docker kill` the existing dev container before proceeding.
- Currently takes a hard dependency on `docker` being available in the
user's `PATH`.

Release Notes:

- Added ability to Open a project in a DevContainer, provided a
`.devcontainer/devcontainer.json` is present

Remove workspace-hack (#40216)
We've been considering removing workspace-hack for a couple reasons:
- Lukas ran into a situation where its build script seemed to be causing
spurious rebuilds. This seems more likely to be a cargo bug than an
issue with workspace-hack itself (given that it has an empty build
script), but we don't necessarily want to take the time to hunt that
down right now.
- Marshall mentioned hakari interacts poorly with automated crate
updates (in our case provided by rennovate) because you'd need to have
`cargo hakari generate && cargo hakari manage-deps` after their changes
and we prefer to not have actions that make commits.

Currently removing workspace-hack causes our workspace to grow from
~1700 to ~2000 crates being built (depending on platform), which is
mainly a problem when you're building the whole workspace or running
tests across the the normal and remote binaries (which is where
feature-unification nets us the most sharing). It doesn't impact
incremental times noticeably when you're just iterating on `-p zed`, and
we'll hopefully get these savings back in the future when
rust-lang/cargo#14774 (which re-implements the functionality of hakari)
is finished.

Add workspace-hack (#27277)
This adds a "workspace-hack" crate, see
[mozilla's](https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/3a265fdc9f33e5946f0ca0a04af73acd7e6d1a39/build/workspace-hack/Cargo.toml#l7)
for a concise explanation of why this is useful. For us in practice this
means that if I were to run all the tests (`cargo nextest r
--workspace`) and then `cargo r`, all the deps from the previous cargo
command will be reused. Before this PR it would rebuild many deps due to
resolving different sets of features for them. For me this frequently
caused long rebuilds when things "should" already be cached.

To avoid manually maintaining our workspace-hack crate, we will use
[cargo hakari](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari) to update the build files
when there's a necessary change. I've added a step to CI that checks
whether the workspace-hack crate is up to date, and instructs you to
re-run `script/update-workspace-hack` when it fails.

Finally, to make sure that people can still depend on crates in our
workspace without pulling in all the workspace deps, we use a `[patch]`
section following [hakari's
instructions](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari/0.9.36/cargo_hakari/patch_directive/index.html)

One possible followup task would be making guppy use our
`rust-toolchain.toml` instead of having to duplicate that list in its
config, I opened an issue for that upstream: guppy-rs/guppy#481.

TODO:
- [x] Fix the extension test failure
- [x] Ensure the dev dependencies aren't being unified by Hakari into
the main dependencies
- [x] Ensure that the remote-server binary continues to not depend on
LibSSL

I believe this takes care of the remaining events running through the

transforming the events going through the old flow.

title_bar: Remove dependency on recent_projects (#20942)
Use actions defined in zed_actions to interface with that crate instead.
One drawback of this is that we now hide call controls when any modal is

Restore unsaved buffers on restart (#13546)
This adds the ability for Zed to restore unsaved buffers on restart. The
user is no longer prompted to save/discard/cancel when trying to close a
Zed window with dirty buffers in it. Instead those dirty buffers are
stored and restored on restart.

It does this by saving the contents of dirty buffers to the internal
SQLite database in which Zed stores other data too. On restart, if there
are dirty buffers in the database, they are restored.

On certain events (buffer changed, file saved, ...) Zed will serialize
these buffers, throttled to a 100ms, so that we don't overload the
machine by saving on every keystroke. When Zed quits, it waits until all
the buffers are serialized.

### Current limitations
- It does not persist undo-history (right now we don't persist/restore
undo-history regardless of dirty buffers or not)
- It does not restore buffers in windows without projects/worktrees.
Example: if you open a new window with `cmd-shift-n` and type something
in a buffer, this will _not_ be stored and you will be asked whether to
save/discard on quit. In the future, we want to fix this by also
restoring windows without projects/worktrees.

### Demo

### Related tickets

I'm unsure about closing them, without also fixing the 2nd limitation:
restoring of worktree-less windows. So let's wait until that.

- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/4683

### Note on performance

- Serializing editing buffer (asynchronously on background thread) with
500k lines takes ~200ms on M3 Max. That's an extreme case and that
performance seems acceptable.

Release Notes:

- Added automatic restoring of unsaved buffers. Zed can now be closed
even if there are unsaved changes in buffers. One current limitation is
that this only works when having projects open, not single files or
empty windows with unsaved buffers. The feature can be turned off by
setting `{"session": {"restore_unsaved_buffers": false}}`.

@SomeoneToIgnore This code should 100% work for future Zed users, but
